This is an extremely powerful novel and one that I would highly recommend. It deals with difficult subject matter – that of two adolescent girls being seduced and manipulated by an older man and the resulting consequences twenty years on – in a way that is not harrowing, but instead insightful and thought-provoking.
The novel opens with readers discovering that two eighteen-year-old women, Serena and Poppy, were charged with the torture and murder of history teacher, Marcus Halnsley. Dubbed ‘The Ice Cream Girls’ by the media because of a sensational and provocative photograph of them wearing string bikinis and eating ice cream – this photograph will haunt them for the next twenty years following the trial. Poppy went to prison and twenty years on wants to clear her name. Married mother of two, Serena, wants no one in her present life to know about her past. But their secrets can’t stay buried when Poppy is released and when the past is revealed, the present begins to unravel. The truth of what really happened to Poppy and Serena when they were teenagers is shocking but moving. Dorothy Koomsom is a fantastic writer and her latest book is her best yet.
