The Doctor and the Diva is a breathtakingly good read that follows the illicit love affair between a medical doctor specialising in fertility treatments and a talented, but tortured opera singer. Set in 1903, Dr Ravell is a young, Harvard-trained obstetrician who has earned an esteemed reputation for helping couples conceive. But then he meets Erika, a beautiful, complicated woman, and professional and personal boundaries become extremely blurred. She is married to a wealthy Boston businessman, but is torn between trying to conceive their longed for child and continuing her opera career.
The book is set first in snowy Boston, but then extends to the islands and jungles of South America to a geranium-covered terrace in Florence. It is a novel of obsession and tragedy. Both the doctor and the diva make life-changing choices, but ultimately are the consequences worth it? Atmospheric, beautiful and evocative, The Doctor and the Diva is a book about two ill-fated lovers that I couldn’t put down until the surprising ending.
