In the past Jeff Abbot has written thrillers about the ‘everyday’ man caught up in extraordinary circumstances. In his new novel, Adrenaline, the author has created a different type of hero, however. Sam Capra is a highly trained intelligence officer, skilled at getting himself out of tricky situations – smart and athletic – and capable of killing. In the opening chapters he kisses Lucy, his seven-month pregnant wife, goodbye for the day before heading into the office, not knowing that morning his life is going to change forever. Some time later Lucy phones, urging him to meet her outside his work place. Alarmed by her tone, he runs out onto the street and sees her in a car with an unknown scarred man – just before a bomb explodes killing all his colleagues.
Branded by the CIA as a traitor it soon becomes clear that he has been set up. Imprisoned and subjected to torture, he repeatedly protests his innocence and is nearly driven mad with the thought of what has happened to his pregnant wife. When he finally escapes from the ‘Company’ Sam goes on a desperate hunt for the killer who stole his family.
This is an edge-of-your-seat, page-turning novel that reads like a movie with its short scenes that drive the story forward. And what a story! After Sam escapes it is a rollercoaster of action and intrigue until the final chapter. Adrenaline is the start of a new series and I can’t wait for the next instalment. This is assured suspense writing and Jeff Abbott’s best book to-date. Utterly gripping.
